The Revolutionary Harmsco Hurricane Combines Three Filtration Technologies
In A Single Compact Design

Centrifugal Separation To Remove Dense Particles From Liquids
Liquid enters the Hurricane filter's outer chamber tangentially, producing
a rotational flow. This flow pattern creates a centrifugal force which
is used to separate dense particles such as sand, rust, grit and metal
fines from liquids. Heavy particles drop to the bottom of the filter's
outer chamber where they are discharged manually, automatically or continuously.
With the dense particles removed, liquid and the light solids rise up,
over and into an inner chamber where the rotational flow is continued.
Up-Flow Cartridge Filtration And Angled Pleats For Lightweight Particle
Removal
Lighter solids are removed in the filter's inner chamber by a proprietary
filter cartridge made with deep, angled pleats which are directed toward
the liquids rotational flow. As forces of the liquids collide with the
cartridge, the pleats "flutter" which distributes particulate
evenly within the pleated area. Filter efficiencies are dramatically improved
to provide longer filter runs and reduced filter costs. Hurricane filter
elements are available in a wide range of micron ratings and may be cleaned
and reused in most applications and most micron ratings.
Genuine Harmsco Products Assure Superior Performance
- Tangential entry in outer chamber for centrifugal separation of dense
particles.
- Purge drain provided to discharge dense solids manually, automatically
or continuously.
- Inner chamber for pleated filter cartridge to remove lightweight particulate.
- Patented, deep angled pleats lean toward filter's rotational flow
for increased solids removal, longer filter runs, and reduced cartridge
replacement costs.
- Single filter cartridge is easy to remove. Superior sealing provided
with patented, dual durometer end caps and o-rings built-in.
- Proprietary Polyester-Plus filter media is highly efficient; cleanable
and reusable in most applications and most micron ratings.

Waste Treatment
A metal finishing plant installed our HUR-170-HP filters (two with
0.35 cartridges; two with one micron cartridges) to lower zinc levels
in their effluent. After installation and testing, the firm was
in compliance and written approval was granted. Customer reports
the cartridge (above) removed twenty pounds of particulate.

Cooling Tower Filtration
Westory Building, located in Washington, DC, installed a Hurricane
Filter on a side-stream to eliminate clogged strainers and fouled
condenser coils on their forced draft cooling tower. The Hurricane
cartridge (see above) can be cleaned and reused "numerous"
times according to the building superintendent.

Surface Waters
The State of Vermont utilized three Hurricane filters for surface
water filtration and to protect the public from Giardia Cysts. After
filtering 500,000 gallons of water, the initial 50 micron cartridge
was cleaned several times and replaced once. The 20 micron and one
micron final filters were never cleaned or replaced.

Public Water Supply
The New York State Bureau of Public Water Supply Protection determined
Harmsco Hurricane Filters (with five micron cartridge), following
pre-treatment and preceding Harmsco Up-Flow Filters (with one micron
cartridge) are recommended equipment options for water supplies
up to 15,000 gallons per day.
